The Star By My Head

2014 Milkweed Editions

"An extraordinary gift." -Robert Hass

Published in partnership with the Poetry Foundation, this breathtaking anthology features eight of Sweden’s most highly regarded poets.

From Edith Södergran to Gunnar Ekelöf to Nobel Prize-winning Tomas Tranströmer, Sweden has long been home to a rich and luminous poetic tradition, notable for refreshing openness, striking honesty, and a rare transcendence that often springs from keen attention to the natural world. In the poems of The Star by My Head, which begin in the early twentieth century and come up to the present day, pinecones cluster out of reach and lilacs attempt their tentative rebirth each year. A bee makes a face like a newborn’s. A name etched in vapor on a windowpane, and its erasure, brings happiness.

With exquisite translations by internationally acclaimed poets and translators Malena Mörling and Jonas Ellerström offered alongside the Swedish originals, The Star by My Head is an essential bilingual volume and the premiere American anthology of its kind.

On Foot I Wandered Through The Solar Systems

Pioneering Scandinavian modernist Edith Södergran’s rather short life ended in Finland on June 22nd, 1923 on Midsummer’s Eve, the longest day of the year. She was born 31 years earlier on April 4th, 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia to Swedish upper middle-class parents. Her work has been translated into close to thirty languages and her influence on 20th and 21st-century Scandinavian poetry is both unrivaled and ongoing. If there is, in this world, a possibility for an entirely free and pure poetics, a state of writing from an unbounded spontaneity carried as if entwined with the present moment, then that might have been the poetics of Edith Södergran. She once wrote: “There are words I have never heard, but I need those words. Perhaps your own heart could give you or tell you those words. But have you ever believed your own heart?”
